誇張
誇張是修辭的一種手段，其目的是在于對某種事物或情況的強調，給人(rén)以深刻印象，同時(shí)增強語言藝術(shù)的感染力。
例如:
I haven't seen you for ages.
我很(hěn)長時(shí)間(jiān)沒有(yǒu)見到你(nǐ)了。
for ages隻是強調時(shí)間(jiān)長。其意是for a long time, 因此，不宜直譯，而是意譯。
Thanks a million.
萬分感謝。
million也是對very much的強調，應意譯。
I have told you fifty times.
我對你(nǐ)講過無數(shù)次了。
fifty time，隻強調次數(shù)多(duō)(many times)，并不是“五十次”的意思。因此，以意譯為(wèi)好。
New factories, new colleges and universities are mushrooming up in these districts.
新工廠和(hé)大(dà)學如雨後春筍般地迅速建設起來(lái)。
are mushrooming up不宜譯為(wèi)“蘑菇般地迅速增長”，而應譯為(wèi)“雨後春筍般地迅速建設起來(lái)”。
但(dàn)是，有(yǒu)些(xiē)句子在漢語表達習慣允許的情況下，也可(kě)以采取直譯。例如:
I'm the happiest man in the world.
我是世界上(shàng)最幸福的人(rén)。
Five years ago primer Zhou Enlai promised to send me an invitation to visit China every five years until I was two hundred.
五年前周恩來(lái)總理(lǐ)答(dá)應每五年邀請(qǐng)我到中國訪問一次.一直到我二百歲。
I'd like to give the world to see you.
隻要見到你(nǐ)，我願意放棄整個(gè)世界。
這個(gè)句子隻是強調渴望見到你(nǐ)的迫切心情，直譯出來(lái)較為(wèi)生(shēng)動，保持了原文的神似與形似。如果意譯為(wèi)“我渴望見到你(nǐ)”，就未能表達出原文的迫切感。
委婉
這種修辭的特點就是應該直言的話(huà)，換成婉轉含蓄的說法，使語言變得(de)動聽(tīng)、悅耳、活潑、幽默、有(yǒu)趣，給人(rén)以“盡在不言中”之感。正因如此，在漢譯上(shàng)應給盡M采用直譯，保持原文的風采。例如:
On the 14th of March at a quarter to three in the afternoon，the greatest living thinker ceased to think... when we came back we found him in his armchair, peacefully gone to sleep... but forever.
三月十四日下午二點三刻，當代最偉大(dà)的思想家(jiā)停止了思維……我們回來(lái)時(shí)，發現他在安樂椅上(shàng)安靜地長眠了……永遠地長眠了。
gone to sleep是died的委婉說法。“死亡”在英語中有(yǒu)很(hěn)多(duō)委婉說法，如:to pass away, to go west, to go to glory, to be gone，to go to heaven。breathe one's last。
But I hated him，and I had a feeling he'd surely lead us both
to our ancestors.
to our ancestor是‘ 見祖先”，是“去送死”的委婉說法。因此，_直譯為(wèi):
但(dàn)是我恨他，我也預感到他會(huì)領着咱們倆去見祖先。
After three days in Japan，the spinal column becomes extraordinary flexible.
在日本待上(shàng)三天以後，脊梁骨就會(huì)變得(de)特别柔軟靈活。
因為(wèi)日本人(rén)待人(rén)禮貌，習慣彎腰鞠躬，所以用“脊梁骨就會(huì)變得(de)柔軟靈活”的說法，取代鞠躬。
